Berries are some of the sweetest little bursts of summer flavor your garden can produce, and now is a great time to plant and still get a harvest this year.  Lots of new berry varieties don’t need to be planted directly in the ground — they thrive in containers for close-at-hand snacking.  Plus, growing berries on the deck can make it a bit tougher for deer and other four-legged berry-lovers to steal them away before you harvest. Brazelberriey brand is a relatively new family of dwarf blueberries and raspberries that are thornless, self-pollinating, and love growing in containers… they’re the perfect deck plants!

You can of course plant Brazelberries in the ground as well, but if you grow them in a patio container, just move the entire container into the garage during the winter.  Water once every month or so with just a bit of water (if it’s not freezing — this winter you probably wouldn’t have needed to water at all), and then bring the pot back out in the spring and start a normal watering schedule again.  Your Brazelberry will leaf out back into its compact, round shape in just a few weeks!

Some of our favorite Brazelberries include:

Raspberry Shortcake: The carefree Raspberry Shortcake is thornless, self-pollinating, and requires no trellising or staking. Enjoy full-size, nutritious and super sweet raspberries in mid-summer, right from your deck chair… if you have room for a pot, you have room for a raspberry patch!

Jelly Bean Blueberry: A charming little puffball of a blueberry, Jelly Bean is a prolific producer of large, flavorful blueberries mid-summer; their super sweet flavor is just like homemade blueberry jelly!  Late summer brings red tips to the foliage, contrasting beautifully with the large blue clusters of berries.

Pink Icing Blueberry: The Pink Icing Blueberry produces large, sweet, robust blueberries perfect for snacking, but it’s the foliage that’s most surprising on this compact bush. Spring brings lovely new growth foliage in varying shades of pink mixed with blue and deeper greens. In the winter, Pink Icing takes on stunning iridescent turquoise blue hues.

We also carry Blueberry Glaze Blueberry and Peach Sorbet Blueberry by Brazelberries, along with four other varieties of non-dwarf blueberries, 4 other varieties of non-dwarf raspberries, strawberries, grapes, Josta berries, elderberries and Goji berries, but we didn’t want to make your mouth water TOO much by featuring them all in one blog post.  If you can handle it, see more sweet berry pics by following us on Instagram here.

And best of all, for the next week from 6/6/15 to 6/12/15, all of our small fruits (including all the berries mentioned in this post) are Buy 1, Get 1 FREE while supplies last.  Stop in for this juicy savings event and expand the edible parts of your garden!
