Happy Mother’s Day! Pansies are fantastic cool weather flowers. Ours have been planted in our front planters for several weeks now and are blooming beautifully!

Mother’s Day is a notable holiday for gardeners in NYS since it’s the date after which plants are usually safe from frost.  This year (2014) we may be a week or two behind after the cold winter and wet spring we’ve had, but hardier flowers like pansies & petunias, as well as cold weather vegetables like onions, cabbage, lettuce, cauliflower and potatoes, are certainly ready to plant outside.  Plus, we’re all antsy to get going, and let’s be honest — Mother’s Day is the perfect excuse to buy extra flowers!  (Working here, it’s tough not taking everything home ourselves 🙂 )

Check out this news report that features our General Manager, Mike Griffin, for the low-down on this year’s weather:

So, celebrate the mom in your life and celebrate the arrival of spring with flowers, vegetables, or some combination thereof.  As long as it’s green and growing, it’s all good!
