January 31, 2025 Birds, Wildlife February isn’t just a month for love—it’s also Bird Feeding Month, a time to give back to our feathered friends who need a little extra care during the colder months. As the weather chills, many birds face challenges finding food, making it the perfect time to help them survive and thrive. Whether you’re an experienced birdwatcher or new to the birding world, here’s how you can make a difference for birds this February. Why February? During the winter, natural food sources for birds like insects, berries, and seeds can be scarce. By providing food, you can give them the extra boost they need to stay healthy. Bird Feeding Month encourages us to take action—whether it’s by putting out feeders or making our yards more bird-friendly. Set Up a Feeder: If you don’t already have one, now’s the perfect time to set up a bird feeder. Choose a variety of seeds like sunflower, safflower, and nyjer, which attract different species. If you have a larger yard, consider multiple feeders to support a range of birds. Offer High-Energy Foods: During winter, birds need food that gives them energy quickly. Suet cakes, peanut butter, or specially formulated winter bird seed mixes are perfect for helping birds stay strong through the cold. Fatty foods are especially important during this time. Provide Fresh Water: Birds need water for drinking and bathing, even in cold weather. A heated birdbath can be a lifesaver, keeping the water from freezing. If you don’t have a heated one, just make sure to check and refill any water source you provide every day. Keep Your Feeders Clean: Clean feeders are essential for keeping birds healthy. Clean your feeders regularly to prevent the spread of disease and mold. A simple wash with warm, soapy water and a thorough rinse will do the trick. Plant Bird-Friendly Shrubs and Trees: If you have space in your yard, plant native plants that provide food and shelter for birds. Berry-producing bushes, like holly or elderberry, will offer an important food source, and trees can provide protection from predators and harsh weather. Bird Feeding Month is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with nature and support our local bird populations. Whether you’re setting up a feeder for the first time or just tweaking your backyard to be more bird-friendly, every small action counts. This February, let’s show our love for birds by helping them thrive through the colder months. So grab your binoculars, put out some birdseed, and enjoy the beauty of our feathered friends all month long. Happy Bird Feeding Month! Thanks for joining and stay tuned for next time!
