Make-Your-Own Rain Barrel Workshop
Wednesday, June 19, 2019, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Van Putte Gardens
136 North Ave., Rochester, NY 14626
Admission: $40

– A Hands-on Workshop –

Rain barrels are a useful, thrifty, and eco-friendly addition to the home landscape and the community at large.  Rain barrels collect water and store it for when you need it most to water plants, wash your car, or to top a swimming pool.  Garden and lawn watering accounts for 40% of residential water use during the summer, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Thanks to a rain barrel’s water catch, the typical gardener can save 1,300 gallons of water during the growing season.  They also reduce the amount of water that needs to undergo expensive sewage treatment by reducing stormwater runoff to storm drains by collecting rainwater runoff from rooftops.

Join us for a hands-on interactive workshop where you will learn the benefits of rain barrels, and how to install and use one in your own backyard from our expert instructor.  Then it will be time to put together your own 55-gal rain barrel to take home! Don’t worry if you’re not super handy — we will have plenty of help on-site to assist you with the construction if needed.  Attendees can then connect their rain barrels to a gutter downspout at home.

This workshop is subsidized by a state grant to educate the public on water quality and is sponsored by the Stormwater Coalition of Monroe County.  The instructor is Caroline Kilmer M.S., a stormwater consultant who has over 17 years of experience in the area of water quality and has helped design and construct many local rain gardens, and Tim Cawley from the Rochester Museum and Science Center.

Reservations and pre-payment are required. Space is limited and this event will fill quickly, so don’t delay and RSVP by calling (585) 225-7770.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • RAIN DATE: This workshop will be held outside, weather depending.  Rain date is Wednesday, June 26 at 6:30 p.m.  All efforts will be made to hold the workshop on the original date, but attendees should be available to attend either time.  If we are rained out both days, workshop fees will be refunded in the original method of payment.  There will be no refunds offered if the workshop is held on the rain date instead of original date.
  • YOUR VEHICLE: We will have staff on hand to assist you with loading your vehicle.  Please make sure to leave space in your vehicle to transport your barrel home that night.

Drop-in Clinic: Pest/Disease Identification
Sunday, August 11, 2019, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Van Putte Gardens
136 North Ave., Rochester, NY 14626
Admission: FREE
Summer is here and now that you’ve got your gardens planted, ’tis the season for animal pests, insects, and disease to become more visible, and more destructive — Mother Nature likes to give us all a challenge from time to time!

But never fear! Our Green Thumb staff have got you covered.  During this drop-in clinic, our resident horticulturalist/botanist/Greenhouse Manager/Garden Center Manager/all-around-plant-guru’s Steve & Rick will be available to diagnose your lawn, vegetable, flower, tree, and shrub problems, and then offer easy organic and non-organic solutions! Want to see whats really eating your plants? Check out Rick’s handy-dandy microscope with TV display for a great view of whatever issues you have.

Before You Arrive:

4 Easy Steps to Collect a Sample for Pest/Disease Identification:

  1. Observe your plant (or turf) in the morning and evening. Sometimes insects are only active at certain times of day and you don’t want to miss the culprit!
  2. Make a note of where the plant is growing, how long it’s been planted, and any other details (like if you’ve been away on vacation for a week, if any other plants have similar damage, etc.).
  3. Collect a sample of any insects you see, and a clipping from the damaged plant. Try to catch any live insects in a bag or sealed container, or bring a clipping of the transitional area (where the plant or turf changes from healthy to damaged). For turfgrass, cut a 1 foot square section that includes the transitional area.
  4. Try to take a picture of the entire plant/tree or lawn area so we can see the extent of the damage.
  5. Bring your notes, pictures and sample to Steve/Rick during the clinic, and they will determine the cause, then offer organic or other solutions per your preference!

Note:

  • Arrive any time between 1 and 3 p.m. – this is a drop-in event.
  • Please bring a sample and pictures of any specific lawn/garden problems, or just bring your general lawn and garden questions – Steve & Rick are great resources!
