After a long winter, many of us are looking everywhere for much-anticipated signs of spring. While most of my flowers remain happily napping, I did find one perennial that is ready to bloom – my hellebore. Hellebores are sometimes called “Christmas roses;” however, in our zone, they typically bloom in March. They are also known as Lenton Roses, this name is more suitable for our region as they flower around the traditional period of Lent. As such, they are among the earliest perennials to bloom and true harbingers of spring. Such a breath of fresh air!CultivationHellebores are semi-evergreen and their flowers are typically white or shades of dusky pink. Some varieties have dramatic deep maroon blossoms. Regardless of color, this hardy plant is certain to attract attention in your landscape! They prefer a partly shaded location, and are well-suited for planting near/under deciduous shrubs as they bloom when shrubs are still bare. Deer usually avoid Hellebores – another excellent attribute. These plants are not overly particular; just make sure they are in a well-drained location. They will benefit from a trimming in the fall. As always, make sure you keep new plantings watered while they become established in their new home.If you are interested in trying Hellebores for the first time, or adding to your current collection, stop by and take a look at our selection of these and other easy-to-grow perennials. Our first shipment of Hellebores is expected in early to mid-April.Written by: Jenna Holzschuh, Green Goods Buyer & Manager
